Welcome to the Nurse's Office
My name is Donna Hess. I am a Registered Nurse and this is my 30th year as a School Nurse for Gainesville ISD.
I am at the Gainesville Jr. High full time. I can be reached anytime during school hours at 665-4062. My direct line is 612-5622. My e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org
Screening will be performed on ALL 7th grade students during September. Screening will also be completed on 8th graders who are new to GJH. This includes the recording of height & weight along with vision & hearing screening. For the 7th graders, it also includes screening for Acanthosis Nigricans. This is based on a ring of pigmentation at the back of the neck. It usually occurs in children who are overweight and can be an indicator of Type II Diabetes. Parents will be mailed the results of the 7th grade screening. Scoliosis screening is conducted on all 8th graders upon their return from Christmas break. You will receive notification only if your child is found to have scoliosis. Head lice screenings are also conducted each semester on the entire student body.
Another important aspect of my job is to ensure that each and every student has the required immunizations for school attendance. State law requires all 7th graders to have a Tdap booster, varicella booster, and an MCV4 immunization. Letters will be sent to parents of all 6th graders at Lee Intermedate informing them of the needed immunizations.
During the month of November, I conduct Tobacco Awareness programs for 7th grade students through their Science classes. We discuss smoking, smokeless tobacco, and marijuana. It is usually a very eye-opening class that the classes seem to enjoy.
Once each semester, I also conduct Alcohol Awareness classes for 8th grade students through their Health classes. This is a two day presentation.
8th graders will receive abstinence education during their semester in Health. I present a 3 day series that covers anatomy, STD's and contraception, sex & the law. Parental notification letters will be sent home prior to the presentation. Parents have the option of removing their student from the class during this week.
During the spring time, our abstinence education occurs for all 7th grade students. Again, parents will receive a letter prior to the presentation and parents do have the opportunity to remove their child from the instruction.
Please feel free to call me anytime with questions or concerns.
